Ex In response to a request from the Argus, U. Leis sends the followinjt letter on orchard care books on orchard care are sometimes misleading, but this information is from actual ex perience. All know the kind of apples I have raised wherever exhibited, and first premiums have been awarded me against world-renowned apple growing districts. Our former Fruit In spector Atwell says "You have the cleanest orchard in the Wil amette Valley." What 1 have done all can do who will follow these directions. 1 will begin with the worst form or anthrac nose, which is the worst that an orchard man has to ' on tend against. In the Fall alter the leaves have fallen I use one part of Lime and Sulphur Solution to a parts of water, and again in a. . n i . . a i me spring wncn me Duds are swelling I repeat the same dose, If no anthracnose is apparent use the solution 1 to 10. I have reference to the Aetna Brand of lime and sulphur, as I know how it is made and know its ingred ients, and will guarantee itto do tne work, this is the house cleaning spraying. Now what ever is done do not be in too much haste to get through, but soak every part of the tree and every limb and branch, for if you miss some parts your spray uitr win not nave the proper eitect. ihe ban Jose scale mul upiies rapiaiy. one rema le Dro- ducing five million of the young in a season. What would 100 females do if left? The next spraying is for scale. You have noticed the black spots that make tne apple so unsightly prac tcally unsalable. for this I use one 1 gal. of lime and sulphur to 25 parts of water. Spray when the cluster opens and the blossoms shows pink, or rather when they are in a ball, but not open. This is the first scale spraying. The next is when the petals have fallen Now be sure they are off the trees. If you spray before they fall it will do but little good, and you will kill every bee that ven tures on the blossoms. Besides the stamen will not be suffi ciently withered to allow the poison to enter the calyx cup. Uie a coreaux nozzle as it will peietrate farther. The nozzle should be turned downward in stead of upward. 1 hen comes the pnncipal spray in for the codling moth and if you omit this you may as well emit all others. For this I use l to 3 lbs. Grasselli brat'd of ar senate of lead adding about 1J gals, of lime and sulphur solu tion to 50 gafs. of water. The next spraying will be about the 20th of June if Weather is favor able. Ude the same amount of arsenate of lead, lime and sul phur, about 35 of water to 1 of lime and sulphur. The last spray ing will be about the 20th of August, for the second brood of codling, using the same dope as for the second spraying. You may omit the lime and sulphur u tnere is no tall scab. jnow it tnese directions are followed closely I will guarantee you will have good, clean fruit and you will be proud of it In conclusion, don t spray in rainy weather as it will not ad here to the tree or foliage. The above comes from 25 years of or chard experience. More could be said, but'.this covers the ground." , ji ma POPUOfMECHAMCS A1A0AZIND 300 ARTKUS-300 IUUSTBATI0N3 VFVP Informed ol lh World'.
